We live in a world surrounded by social media. Almost everyone has access to at least one platform. Every day, we’re scrolling through reels, watching YouTube shorts or videos, and listening to podcasts.
When I looked online, I found that kids and tweens spend an average of 6 to 8 hours a day in front of screens. That’s almost one-third of the day spent watching something!
It made me wonder—how much information are we actually taking in daily? And how much of it is really valuable? Is spending so much time on social media truly worth it? What kind of value are we adding to our lives by doing this? Let’s think about it.
We all know we spend a lot of time in front of screens. But how do we reduce it? Is it easy to stop?
No, it’s not easy. We’ve built these screen habits over a long time, so breaking free won’t happen overnight. But it’s something we need to work on.
The best way to reduce screen time is by trying digital fasting.
Digital fasting means taking a break from digital devices and the internet on purpose for a certain amount of time. It’s a simple way to disconnect and refresh!
How do you do it?
Start by avoiding YouTube, Facebook Reels, or Instagram for one day a week. I prefer Sunday since it’s easier to test how we use our free time on a weekend. Keep your phone away and only pick it up if someone calls. Otherwise, leave it far from reach.
Now, without my phone, I feel free but also a bit bored. How can I stay engaged?
Play with Kids
One great way is to spend more time with our kids. Chat with them, play games, and enjoy activities together. When we interact and play with them, they’ll also start moving away from their gadgets. This helps reduce screen time for both us and them—a win-win situation!
Reading books
If you are alone, try reading books. It’s one of the best options I’ve found. Reading gives us energy and refreshes our minds.
Choose books you enjoy—fiction, non-fiction, anything you like. This habit can definitely help reduce your screen time and keep you engaged.
Declutter your home
Another great way to spend your time is by keeping your home clean. You can declutter or clean your desk, cupboard, shelves, kitchen, bedroom, and more.
It not only makes your home look better but also gives you a sense of satisfaction.
There are many other ways to spend time effectively, like walking, playing outdoor games, or chatting with people. These activities can help you avoid boredom and keep you engaged.
In conclusion, reducing screen time might not be easy, but it’s possible with small, intentional steps like digital fasting, spending quality time with family, reading books, or keeping your home clean.
These simple habits can help us break free from screens, refresh our minds, and add more value to our daily lives. Let’s take control of our time and make it count!
